What is the red colour given off Kwila/Merbau?
The species contains a natural resin that bleeds and discolours the timber while it is drying. The timber will not bleed this rich red colour when it is dry, and the timber will age to a silver grey colour.
 
What is the strength and durability of your hardwood?
Kwila/Merbau is very durable and has a strength rating of 9plus (on a scale of 10). It also has a low shrinkage factor.
 
What is Kwila/Merbau and what is it used for?
Kwila and Merbau are very closely related species. The Botanical Names are Intsia bijuga and Intsia palembanica. Merbau is imported from Indonesia and Kwila is imported from Papua New Guinea.

Kwila/Merbau is used both structurally and decoratively in a range of exterior uses where stability and durability are important. It is also used indoors where a rich or dark timber is desired. It is used for outdoor furniture, exterior decking, posts and joinery and can have similar application internally for joinery, floors and stairs.
